“The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” – Samuel Johnson
GC Italia is a group of 7 students from Chile, China, Germany and India – all Fellows of the Melton Foundation. The aim of our project was to interact with locals in Italy and to gain insight into their opinions and perspectives on various cultural, political and social issues. At the same time, we also tried to connect with them through personal stories and experiences, to understand them as a person while exchanging ideas and views on Global Citizenship, too. Interacting with the citizens away from the bustling crowds of tourists revealed more about present day Italy than any travel guide would. These interviews with the backdrop of breathtaking historical wonders, warm and friendly people, culinary delights and wandering on paths rarely taken, gave us a rare glimpse of the heart of Italy.
